Mrs. E. B. Towns is my step-great grandmother.  Her maiden name is Elizabeth “Eliza” J. Browning.  She married my great-grandfather, Elisha E. Towns, on May 1, 1904.  She was his second wife.

June 1880 Census Record for Montgomery, District 394, Georgia lists her parents as Green, age 35, and Charlotte, age 35.  Both born in Georgia.  Eliza is listed as age 6, born in Montgomery, Georgia.  3 siblings listed as Harrison, John, and Henry.

1890 Georgia Federal census records burned in a 1921 warehouse fire with the exception of remnants containing part of Columbus Town in Muscogee County (source:  CensusFinder).

Browning (age 72) and Charlotte (age 70).  She is 45 years old, married.  2 of her children are listed:  Albert Towns (age 7) and Woodrow Towns (age 5).  No occupation.  [NOTE:  1920 Telfair Census lists Elisha Towns (age 69) living with his son, Arthur Jackson Towns and wife, Lucy Mae Spires.  MYSTERY #1:  Why were they living separately in different counties?  Maybe her parents were ill and needed assistance?]

Death Certificate dated January 14, 1930, Fulton County, Georgia for Elizabeth B. Towns.  Cause of death:  Pulmonary Tuberculosis at age 55, treated from October 1929 to January 1930.  Residence:  723 Lake Avenue, NE.  Father:  G.H. Browning, born in Georgia.  Mother:  C. Clark, born in Georgia.  Info provided by E.T. Towns (presumably her son, Ernest).   MYSTERY #2:  I have not been able to find her burial site.  Below is what is listed on the death certificate, but I can’t make it out.  Does it say “Greenwood Cemetery”?  I’m assuming it is in Atlanta/Fulton County.  I researched the Funeral Home (J. Austin Dillon Co) and they have long since gone out of business.  There seems to be some doubt that any records still exist and who might be in possession of them, if they do.  I have searched findagrave for a memorial in all different ways, but I haven’t been able to come up with a good search result.

I also cannot find a record of her parents burial place.  Green died in Irwin, Georgia and Charlotte died in Wheeler, Georgia.  I have not researched the burial places of her siblings or her children yet.
