I am looking for information on my Great-Aunt, Ella F? Towns.

The 1900 Telfair Towns District Census lists her as White, 8 years old, birthday Mar 1892, and that she could read. She was born in Georgia.

The mother (Mary Jane Walker?) is not listed, but the father is listed as Elisha E. Towns, both born in Georgia. 5 sisters and 2 brothers are listed.

On the 1910 Census, she is not listed as living with her father, who remarried in 1904. She would have been about 18 years old in 1910.

There are 2 census records that mention an Ella F. Towns, a widowed negro.

1930 (Apr 10) Illinois Census, Cook, Chicago, Dist 109
age 38, lodger
born in Georgia
Father born in Virginia
Mother born in Georgia
Occupation: Dressmaker for a private family

1940 (Apr 25) Michigan Census, Newaygo, Merrill, Woodland Park
age 48, Proprietress
born in Georgia
same house of residence since 1935 in Newaygo
Owns residence, 2 lodgers listed
completed 2nd yr of HS
Also mentions that she is in “retail grocery”

Theory: If she was widowed, then her maiden name would not be Towns. Could she have lied about being a widow ?   I’m still not convinced this is the SAME Ella, since the one I am looking for is White.  However, there is no mention of her anywhere else and I don’t remember my family ever talking about her.
